UMTS bearer performance in the presence of the synchronisation channel

چکیده

This paper considers the impact of the UMTS synchronisation channel (SCH) on bearer performance. The SCH is described, and it is shown that it has significantly different characteristics from other interference and noise sources. For this reason, it is important to understand whether it can be generally modelled in a simple way, e.g. by using its average received power. In reality, it is found that this is not the case, and that the performance degrades when the SCH is present for the same average level of Eb/Nt. This shows that the coding / interleaving schemes used are not sufficient to average the temporally selective interference. In particular, it is found that convolutionally coded bearers show higher sensitivity than turbo coded ones, resulting in an increase in the Eb/Nt targets set by the outer loop. A basic analysis indicates that the resulting system capacity loss is not significant. However a full evaluation of this effect will require a more complex analysis based on system simulation.

Spatial and Space-Time Algorithms for Synchronisation in the Downlink of the UMTS FDD and TDD Modes

This paper presents methods for synchronisation in the downlink of the FDD and TDD modes of a UMTS system. Space-time processing based on multiple receive antennas is used to suppress co-channel interference caused by other base stations. We develop a detection-based synchronisation procedure exploiting the structure of the respective UMTS mode, for which we present two alternative detection al...

A UMTS DL DCH Error Model Based on Measurements in Live Networks

In UMTS system level simulations DCH (Dedicated Channel) error models are used to represent the characteristics of lower layers in order to save simulation time. Usually DCH BLER (Block Error Ratio) statistics are taken from link level simulations or only certain fixed values for DCH BLER are used for system level simulations. In this paper we present measurements of UMTS DL(Down Link) DCH erro...

RLC buffer occupancy when using a TCP connection over UMTS

This paper analyzes a TCP connection over UMTS radio access bearer in RLC acknowledged mode. The stacking of RLC and TCP protocols is highly beneficial for the global system behavior. Protocol mechanisms used by RLC are well adapted to wireless constraints and the ARQ function implemented by RLC hides the wireless channel unreliability to TCP. However, RLC protocol parameters have to be careful...

Concatenated extended complementary sequences for inter-base station synchronization in UMTS TDD mode

This paper presents a new family of synchronisation sequences, Concatenated Extended Complementary (CEC) sequences. CEC-sequences have recently been adopted for Release 4 of UMTS TDD mode as inter-base station synchronisation codes. They provide perfect auto-correlation properties within a windo of adjustable size, excellent overall auto-correlation properties and allow the use of low-complexit...
